New Student Orientation — Week 2

Welcome to the Second Week of Orientation! 😃

During this week you will learn all about plagiarism and peer-assessment.
You may think that you’re already familiar with these topics, but I’m sure you will learn so much by reading the resources presented this week.
I know I did! 👍

📝 Plagiarism

Did you know that you can plagiarize yourself?! I didn’t know that either! 😵
During this week I learned the importance of citing phrases and ideas I use in my essays and reports.
Yes! You need to cite ideas too! (I didn’t know that! 💫) Academic writing is really awesome, I’m really looking forward to take English Composition Iand English Composition II to practice and learn more about this type of writing.
Based on what I’ve read, let me tell you that academic writing is an entirely new way to express ideas. It is very rigorous because you need to cite every idea, phrase or paragraph you incorporate into your writing. Even if you change words or rewrite an entire paragraph you can still plagiarize by not including a reference to the original source.
Your ideas and thoughts have to be supported by extensive research and knowledge. I’m really looking forward to start learning more about this!
This week:
  • You will take a short online course on plagiarism.
  • You will learn how to determine if a source of information is reliable.
  • And you will read about the three main ways to avoid plagiarism: summarizingparaphrasing and quoting.
(I will write an article on what I’ve learned about Academic Writing, Stay tuned! 👍)

✏️ Note-Taking Strategies

I had not realized how important it is to develop a new note-taking approach for academic writing until I read a resource included in this week.
When you research journals and papers, it’s not enough to take notes like we usually do in a notebook. To be able to use that information in your essay or report, you need to include key aspects of the resource, such as:
  • Title.
  • Volume.
  • Author.
  • Publication Date.
  • Publisher.
  • Page.
  • Date and/or URL.
If you don’t write down all this data, you can’t use your notes because you would be plagiarizing the author’s ideas.
I really found this week to be very interesting and I look forward to dive into week 3 of the orientation that starts on Thursday (I’m writing this article on a Saturday).
Stay tuned for my next article on Week 3! 👍
